Local Business and Marketing

Buy Local – Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce

Restaurants are in grave and imminent danger of closing: everybody is encouraged to cater to them, buy gift cards and order take-out NOW; also order directly from the restaurants as third party delivery services charge another 30% on top of food cost; retail is hanging on and working hard to get through the winter months.

Free local business directories are an easy and free way to boost your business’s online presence.

This is a great article to help small business owners get the word out to their community about their services or products.

Except they left out Google Maps which is extremely important and Linkedin Business Page for B2B.

COVID Effect on Business

Yelp: Local Economic Impact Report – Need to login into or create Yelp account

Since the first fears of the pandemic emerged in the U.S. in early March, businesses across the nation have endured six months of uncertainty.

The last Yelp Economic Average showed a decreasing number of overall closures, 132,580 in total. As of August 31, 163,735 total U.S. businesses on Yelp have closed since the beginning of the pandemic (observed as March 1), a 23% increase since July 10. In the wake of COVID-19 cases increasing and local restrictions continuing to change in many states we’re seeing both permanent and temporary closures rise across the nation, with 60% of those closed businesses not reopening (97,966 permanently closed).

Small businesses see economy as predominately negative. Most (78%) small business owners categorized the economy as “average,” “somewhat poor,” or “very poor” in August (up 8 points from July). This most recent report marks a significant (40 point) shift from January 2020, when 38% said the same.

Fun and worthwhile volunteer opportunity.

I volunteered for this last year and had a great time! This event is probably the largest on the Monterey Peninsula and very well run for participants, and volunteers.
